The story itself didn’t captivate me much. I felt like there were sudden developments for the sake of the plot moving forward, and even an twist that comes partway through the book felt like [insert sudden development here] rather than the surprise it was supposed to be. I also didn’t catch some of the character connections and payoffs at first, though I suspect that’s due in part to my own inattention.
I can forgive this book a lot despite these grumps, though. It has the most interesting time travel worldbuilding I’ve ever encountered, and it’s even better for the way it uses time travel as a metaphor for social change. I appreciate its careful reflection on whether/when violence is justified in the name of social change (even if the final payoff of that subplot didn’t quite land for me), and I learned a lot about Anthony Comstock and thought a lot about collective action.
So, I have quibbles, but I appreciate what the book is going for.
