My experience of the 2008 financial crisis was an interesting one. I was living abroad as a Mormon missionary, with all my bills paid for by the church (and, indirectly, my parents, who footed the costs that all Mormon missionaries pay). I lived in a bubble of religious purpose wrapped in a bubble of privilege, and it rarely occurred to me that there was real economic crisis happening around me (and all this despite reporting to someone recently retired as a high-ranking executive at Fannie Mae).
All of this is to say that I feel like there’s a lot I’m catching up on about this period of history. Reading Doctorow’s For the Win a couple of times has helped me better understand a time that I lived through as an adult, and this movie did, too. It gave me some productive (if admittedly naïve) anger to act upon, and in recognition of the “admittedly naïve” bit, I’m working on the original book right now to try to make my anger better informed.
