🍿 movieblog: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️)
Had to watch this after finishing Andor, and I spent the first half of it being disappointed??? I thought I remembered this being one of my favorite Star Wars movies, but after the depth and maturity of its tv prequel, it feels kind of superficial.
The last few sequences won me back, though. Andor is the superior story, but this is a fine action movie and a marvelous piece of fanservice.
🍿 movieblog: A Minecraft Movie (❤️❤️🖤🖤🖤)
Man, I really wanted to like this movie. I’m glad kiddo enjoyed it, I did appreciate some of the Jared Hess vibes, and some of the visual design was pretty good, but this was just an excuse to make a bunch of Minecraft references in a movie, and I have never been more aware of green screens in my life.
🍿 movieblog: When the Wind Blows (❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️)
I still want to read the original comic that this and the radio adaptation were based on, but the Internet Archive copy is hard to read, and I had some work to do this afternoon that made it easy to put this on in the background.
I liked this a lot (well, “liked” as much as one can appreciate a black comedy horror story about nuclear war. Some of the experimental animation choices and blending of animated and film footage seemed odd, and I’m torn between appreciating them and finding them distracting.
🍿 movieblog: ❤️❤️❤️❤️🖤 for The Princess Bride
It was really fun to introduce this to kiddo this weekend by watching it as a family. I don’t think this movie will ever be as good as it was when I was a teenager, before I could see the seams and tiny faults with it, but it will always be beloved in my family—and now including kiddo.
🍿 movieblog: ❤️❤️❤️❤️🖤 for Vengeance Most Fowl
I don’t think anything beats The Wrong Trousers in the Wallace and Gromit canon, but this could have been much worse as a follow-up to that classic. It’s silly (mostly in good ways), subtly but wonderfully British, and kept kiddo laughing. It’s the best Wallace and Gromit I’ve seen for a while, even if it isn’t as good as the classic stuff.
🍿 movieblog: ❤️❤️❤️🖤🖤 for Inside Out 2
There’s lots to like about this movie: a good message, some good jokes, and some animation gags that I really liked. It’s hard to live up to the original film, though, and this just didn’t feel as tight. Parts of the plot felt rushed, the internal logic of the first film wasn’t as present, and it felt repetitive with some of the plot beats. I’m glad I saw it, but I think the first captures most of the magic that’s here—and more besides.
🍿 movieblog: ❤️❤️❤️❤️🖤 for If You Were the Only
I have a bunch of small complaints about this movie, but I came away from it generally feeling like it was well done, so I’m erring on the side of a more positive rating. I don’t know if that makes me an uncritical movie watcher, but whatever.
For the most part, I liked the aesthetic choices! It bugged me that the spaceship was modeled after a space shuttle, because that doesn’t make a ton of sense, but I did appreciate that the film went with shorthand in terms of set design instead of trying to make it realistic or whatever.
🍿 movieblog: ❤️❤️❤️❤️🖤 for Dune Part Two
The Dune universe is super weird, and I don’t know that it’s my favorite, but this is a really well done movie.
🍿 movieblog: ❤️❤️❤️❤️🖤 for Dune
This movie looks great and was a lot of fun to watch. I have very vague movies of the book but liked this a lot better.
🍿 movieblog: ❤️❤️❤️❤️🖤 for The Marvels
I came for the Ms. Marvel, and this delivered! She’s a great character, and it was fun to see her in this movie. There were also lots of weird-but-fun bits that I enjoyed.
There are plenty of things about the movie that didn’t work for me, but it’s no less dumb than most Marvel movies, and I have no interest in feeding what I understand is a bunch of hating on the movie.
