๐ linkblog: Talking about the church president over the pulpit | LDS Data Analysis'
Some neat data analysis hereโboth in terms of methods and in findings. Hat tip to Jana Riess for bringing my attention to this in today’s column.
๐ linkblog: Lego to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run | Ars Technica'
Noooo! I was just blogging about wanting to get into this once my kid’s a bit older!
๐ linkblog: CIโs DiGiacomo views information, media literacy as tool to preserve democracy | UKNow'
Glad that my colleagues’ interesting work is getting recognition from our university.
๐ linkblog: Citizens' social media can provide an antidote to propaganda and disinformation'
I fall victim to this despite being a Mastodon fan. Appreciate the reminder to be more careful with language.
๐ linkblog: Right Wingers โFightโ AT&T By Embracing โAnti-Wokeโ Cell CarrierโฆThatโs Just Rebranded AT&T | Techdirt'
Don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
๐ linkblog: Report: Internet providers offer Louisville residents unequal speeds for similar prices โ 89.3 WFPL News Louisville'
I’d skipped over the story when the Markup reported it, but seeing local coverage of how it plays out locally makes it even worse. Municipal broadband ought to be more common!
๐ linkblog: On Choosing Each Other and Eating the Fruit | By Common Consent, a Mormon Blog'
Fantastic post here. One of the first calm moments for me in a very messy faith transition was leaving the Louisville Temple and thinking about how central Adam and Eve’s “disobedience” is in Latter-day Saint theology.
๐ linkblog: Texas Sues Google Over Use of Facial Images - WSJ'
I don’t like Paxton, and I can’t imagine this is much more than performative railing against a strawman version of Big Tech, but this is a real issue, so I’m interested to see where it goes.
๐ linkblog: Yeโs โBuyoutโ Of Parler Looks Very Much Like A Failed Company Taking Advantage Of Troubled Rich Guy | Techdirt'
Insightful speculation by Masnick. Ye’s said some horrible things recently, but that doesn’t mean Parlement can’t be taking advantage of him.
๐ linkblog: The Essential Tech Question for Schools: What Are the Teacher's Objectives?'
See, I get the impression that it’s increasingly district, school, and legislative priorities that are driving tech choices. I agree that teachers ought to have the agency, but I don’t know that’s the case.
๐ linkblog: Trump Is Already Boosting Election Conspiracies Ahead of the Midterms'
I’ve been worrying about 2024, but 2022 is going to be bad enough. GOP needs to do something about this.
๐ linkblog: Kentuckyโs county clerks deal with misinformation as election approaches โ 89.3 WFPL News Louisville'
We’ve had it better than some states, so it’s disappointing to hear all of this.
๐ linkblog: Kanye West is buying โfree speech platformโ Parler - The Verge'
Oh no. This can’t be good.
๐ linkblog: Public Transportation โ Design Goodiness'
Enilda is great, and I appreciate her thoughts here.
๐ linkblog: Students Are Using AI to Write Their Papers, Because Of Course They Are'
Really important story here, and glad to see George Veletsianos quoted. I’ve long been an advocate for developing assessments that are impossible to cheat at, but I don’t know if that’s the entire (or even a practical) response to GPT-3. We are continuing to develop technologies whose societal effects we are not prepares for.
๐ linkblog: Watch how Peter Howell helped remix the 80s Doctor Who theme'
I love this theme tune, so this video was a delight to watch.
๐ linkblog: Metaโs VR Headset Harvests Personal Data Right Off Your Face | WIRED'
I had not thought this much about the privacy implications of VR, and ooooof.
๐ linkblog: Watch the Disturbing Kanye Interview Clips That Tucker Carlson Didnโt Put on Air'
Wild story, and heck of a scoop. Says far more about Tucker Carlson than about Ye.
๐ linkblog: How to Protect Yourself If Your School Uses Surveillance Tech | WIRED'
I hate that there’s a need for articles like this, but I’m glad WIRED is putting them together.
๐ linkblog: Arizona GOP Secretary Of State Candidate Insists โDeep Stateโ Google Is Blocking His Website; Turns Out He Requested It Not Be Indexed | Techdirt'
Politicians need to better understand the internet. This is just as dumb (and perhaps more devious) than the nonsense the governor of Missouri was up to.
๐ linkblog: Pluralistic: 07 Oct 2022 โDonโt install spy on a privacy lab,โ and other lessons for university provosts โ Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow'
There is so much of both horrible and hopeful in this story. The way we’re normalizing surveillance is really worrying, and I’m glad some people are fighting back.
๐ linkblog: Who is ready for a fleet of cubesats flying over cities, displaying ads? | Ars Technica'
This is a terrible idea, and it is wildly irresponsible to do research like this.
๐ linkblog: Talk of โCivil War,โ Ignited by Mar-a-Lago Search, Is Flaring Online - The New York Times'
I am growing more and more nervous about our future.
